Skin Cancer Removal
Procedure
The primary cause of skin cancer is ultra violet radiation most often from
the sun, though it can also be caused by artificial sources, such as sunlamps,
and tanning booths. Removing all or part of the growth and examining it under
a microscope usually diagnoses skin cancer. It can be treated by a number of
different methods, though it depends on the type of cancer it is, it’s stage
of growth, and it’s location on your body. Most skin cancers are removed
surgically either by a plastic surgeon or dermatologist. If the cancer is
small in size it can be removed quickly in an outpatient facility. The
procedure may be a simple excision, which usually leaves a thin non-visible
scar. In this procedure the cancer is scraped out with a special instrument
and the area is treated with an electric current to control bleeding and kill
any remaining cancer cells. If the cancer is large, or if it has spread to the
lymph glands or elsewhere in the body, major more complex surgery may be
required. Your surgeon during your initial evaluation will choose the best
technique for you.
Length of Procedure
The surgery to remove skin cancer can last anywhere from 1 to 2 hours
depending on the extent of your surgery.
Type of Anesthesia
This procedure in many cases is done under local anesthesia, though in some
more complex cases it will be done under general anesthesia, usually done on
an outpatient basis.

Depending on the location and severity of the cancer, the consequences may
range from a small but unsightly scar, to permanent changes in facial

severity and location of the skin cancer, Infection and changes in facial
structure.

surgery, depending on the extent of surgery. Scars will be permanent, and in
some cases unsightly, though with reconstruction surgery you surgeon can
restore you to an acceptable appearance and function.
