Breast Lift
Procedure
Loss of skin elasticity, gravity and other factors can affect the shape and
firmness of your breasts. A breast lift will lift and reshape sagging breast by
removing excess skin and repositioning remaining tissue and nipples. A breast
lift will make the breast firmer and more uplifted. The most common method of
breast lifting involves three incisions. One incision is made around the
areola, the second runs vertically from the bottom edge of the areola to the
crease underneath the breast, and the last incision is horizontal beneath the
breast and follows the natural curve of the breast crease. After your surgeon
has removed excess skin, the nipple and areola are shifted to a higher
position. The areola, which in sagging breast can be stretched in size, will
be reduced if needed. Skin that was formerly located above the areola is
brought down and together beneath it to reshape the breast.
Length of Procedure
This procedure will usually last 3 to 4 hours depending on the extent of your
surgery.
Type of Anesthesia
This procedure is usually done under local anesthesia with sedation, and on a
outpatient basis.
Side Effects
There will be temporary bruising and swelling that will subside within the
first 2 to 3 weeks. You will experience temporary numbness, dry breast skin
and discomfort, which will diminish after a couple of weeks. The incision of
your breast lift surgery will heal and fade over time. Though it is important
to realize, that the incision lines will be permanently visible. You may
experience a loss of sensation in the nipple and areola area, this is usually
temporary. I may however take weeks and some cases months before the
sensation returns to normal.
Risks
Fortunately, significant complications from this procedure are infrequent,
and thousands of people undergo this procedure with no complications.
However, anyone that is considering this procedure should be aware of the
benefits and risks. The potential complications of this surgery are best
discussed on a personal basis with your surgeon. Though some complications
that may be discussed are the risk of thick wide scars, skin loss, unevenly
positioned nipples, and permanent loss of feeling in nipple or breast, which
occurs rarely.
Recovery
After your procedure it is often possible to return back within a week
depending on your job duties. Strenuous activity usually can be resumed in 1
month. You may continue to experience some mild periodic discomfort during
this time, though these feeling are normal.
