Breast Reduction
Procedure
Breast reduction surgery can be performed at any age, though it will be
recommended by your surgeon to wait until your breast development has stopped.
Patients who undergo breast surgery frequently are seeking relief from
physical symptoms caused by the excessive weight of large breasts. Breast
reduction surgery can usually solve these problems as well has improve the
size and shape of your breast. The most common method of reducing the breasts
involves three incisions. Through these incisions your surgeon will remove
excess breast tissue, fat, skin and the nipple and areola are shifted to a
higher position. The areola, which is usually enlarged, will also be reduced.
Skin that was originally located above the nipple is brought down and
together to shape the breast. Liposuction many be used to improve contour
under the arm.

This procedure usually takes 4 to 5 hours depending on the extent of your
surgery.
Type of Anesthesia
This procedure is don under general or local anesthesia with sedation, on an
outpatient basis.
Side Effects
You will experience temporary bruising and swelling that will subside within
a couple of weeks. You will have discomfort and pain that can be controlled
by medication prescribed by your surgeon. You may notice a loss of sensation
in the nipple and areola area, this usually is temporary. It may however take
weeks, months or even longer before sensation returns to normal. Your
incisions will initially be red or pink in color; this will remain for many
months following surgery.
Risks
Fortunately, significant complications from this procedure are infrequent,
and thousands of people undergo this procedure with no complications.

benefits and risks. The potential complications of this surgery are best

that may be discussed include bleeding, infection, and reactions to
anesthesia. Permanent loss of sensation in nipples may occur rarely.
Recovery
After your surgery in most cases you are able to return back to work in 2 to
3 weeks depending on your job. After 3 to 4 weeks you can resume most your
normal activities, including some mild exercise. Sexual activity should be
avoided for a minimum of one week, and your surgeon may advise longer.
